BIDDEFORD — Tuesday is primary day, but the Nov. 4 general election is just a few months away, and with the June 2 deadline passed, there are a handful of non-party candidates added to the mix.

For Congressional District 1, independent Richard Murphy of Sanford has thrown his hat into the ring, challenging incumbent Democrat Chellie Pingree of North Haven Island and Republican Isaac Misuik of Gorham.

In Biddeford’s Maine House District 12, Republican Perry Aberle and Democrat Martin Grohman, neither of whom face a primary challenge, will be joined in the race by independent candidate Barbra Jean Thompson.

Incumbent James J. Campbell of Newfield is in the running for House District 21. He is challenged by Republican Barbara Joan Van Pelt of Parsonsfield. There is no Democrat in the race for the district, which includes Alfred, Limerick, Newfield and Parsonsfield.

In County Commission District 3, which includes Buxton, Dayton, Hollis, Old Orchard Beach and Saco, incumbent Democrat Dan Cabral of Saco will be challenged both by Republican Marston Lovell of Saco and by independent Roger Hicks of Hollis.

And in state Senate District 34, Richard John Burns of Berwick, who once served in the Legislature as a Democrat, is representing the Maine Families Party. He is challenging incumbent Republican Ronald Collins of Wells. Democrat Gary A. Connor of Kennebunk is also in the running Nov. 4. The district includes Acton, Berwick, Kennebunk, Lebanon, North Berwick and Wells.
