BATH — Leona Libby passed away on May 29, 2014, at the age of 89.

Leona, affectionately known as Lonie to her friends, was born in Bath on Sept. 8, 1924, to David and Annie (Ames) Henderson. She attended Morse High School, and married Herschel Libby in February 1942. Once married, Leona traveled around the country with Herschel while he completed basic training for the U.S. Army Air Corps (now known as the Air Force).

Mrs. Libby grew up on the David Henderson Dairy Farm in Bath, and after earning her driver’s license at the age of 15, she began working, delivering milk on the milk truck for her father’s farm.

Leona also worked various jobs while her children were young until they were old enough to attend school full-time. She waitressed at the New Meadows Restaurant for a number of years and also worked at J.C. Penney’s. She especially enjoyed the lasting friendships she made while working at First Federal Savings in Bath for nearly 20 years as a teller and customer service representative. Leona retired from the work force in 1996.

Mrs. Libby was a very devoted wife, loving mother, sister, and grandmother. She enjoyed playing golf, bowling, crossword puzzles, and her beloved pets. Leona also loved music and dancing, particularly the jitterbug.

Leona is survived by her son, Dana S. Libby of Bath; two daughters, Laura L. Jones of Georgetown and Carole L. Tetrault and her husband Kenneth of Abbot; and a sister-in-law, Dottie Libby of Bath. She is also survived by four loving granddaughters, Jennifer Jones of Boston, MA, Stacy Jones of Poughkeepsie, NY, Anna Libby Peppers of Jacksonville, Florida, and Angela McAllister of Monmouth, ME; two great-granddaughters, Rebecca and Shawna; four greatgreat grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Debbie Watson and her three children, Chris, Courtney, Zach and his wife Mary; precious nieces and nephews, David Lee and his wife Sally, the twins, Pat and Pam, Bill Henderson, Bob Henderson, Peter Henderson, Linda McCole Williamson, Judi McCole Moorehead, Bette Jean McCole Bayley, and John McCole.

Leona was predeceased by her loving husband of 72 years Herschel on Sept. 12, 2013, a son Donald H. Libby, her parents, David and Annie Henderson, two brothers, Stanley D. Henderson and Vincent A. Henderson, and two sisters, Eva Henderson Nevins and Doris Henderson McCole.

The Libby family would like to thank the incredible staff at the Hill House in Bath for the amazing care and love they gave to Leona. The family would also like to thank the staff at Hair Creations in Bath (especially Jordan) for their friendship and for making Leona laugh so much over the years.

The memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 21 at 10 a.m. at the Lisbon Falls Baptist Church. Leona will be laid to rest at The Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
