Yes, it is true that inflation exists, taxes have increased, and pocketbooks are tight. It has been true for generations. What is also true is that Scarborough has the second lowest mil rate and the lowest per pupil spending of all the coastal communities in Cumberland County.
Falmouth with the lowest mil rate spends $1,286 more per pupil than Scarborough. (2013 Department of Education online info). Maine historically has the lowest per pupil expenditures in New England. Scarborough’s per pupil expenditure is below the Maine State average.
I wonder if those who voted that the school budget was “too high” were aware of the above facts. The anti-tax stance is unfairly vented 100 percent on our schools. Surrounding communities, including some with lower median incomes, seem to understand the importance of a strong school system for their town’s health and for the next generation’s benefit. South Portland for example, with a community center and a high school construction project, approved an increased school budget last year on the first vote.
In comparison, Scarborough had more than 1,700 more voters turn out to vote on the dog issue than to vote on a quality school system for our town/children. If you valued a quality public education for yourself, please check off “too low” at the next school budget vote. Spread the word and let’s look past our own back yards and do the right thing for our town and our children.
