Meetings

The Board of Selectmen will meet Tuesday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m., at the Town Office.

The Planning Board will meet Wednesday, June 4, at 7 p.m., at the Town Hall.

The Durham Historical Society will meet Tuesday, June 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Old Union Church, Route 136. The group will also hold open days this summer on the third Saturday of June (June 21), July and August. All are welcome to view this wonderful building and the collection of local artifacts.

CEO hours

The interim codes official, Darren Carey, will hold office hours on Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m., starting June 4.

Absentee ballots available

Absentee voting for the Regional School Unit 5 budget validation referendum ends Thursday, June 5.

To request an absentee ballot, come in or call Town Office at 353-2561 ext. 11. Every voter who wants a ballot must request his or her own ballot. Polls are open on Election Day, Tuesday, June 10, from 8 a.m.-8 p.m., Durham Community School, 654 Hallowell Road. Voters should park in upper parking lot closest to Town Office and enter side door. Parking for handicapped is directly in front of school and they may enter through the main lobby. Those with questions or concerns can call 353-2561, ext. 11

Garden workshop

A compost and greenhouse-building workshop will be held at Durham Friends Community Garden, 848 Pinkham Brook Road, Sunday, June 8, at 2 p.m. It will be led by Ian Toal and Leslie Heyl from Wolfe’s Neck Farm.

Farewell reception

The Regional School Unit 5 board has invited the public to a farewell reception for Superintendent Shannon L. Welsh, Tuesday, June 10, from 3-5 p.m., at the Hilton Garden Hotel, 5 Park St., Freeport. A social hour is from 3-4:15 p.m., with speakers at 4:15. Welsh is retiring at the end of this school year.

Masonic bean supper June 14

A bean supper will be held Saturday, June 14, from 4:30-6 p.m., at the Masonic Lodge building, Route 136 across from the River Park in Durham. On the menu are baked beans, chop suey, hot dogs, potato salad, cole slaw, bread, pickles and homemade pies. The cost is $7.50 for adults, $3 for children 5-12 and free for children under 5. Road-Ride-Riddle fundraiser June 7

Road-Ride-Riddle, a fundraiser for the Lisbon Area Christian Outreach Food Pantry, is Saturday, June 7, rain or shine, starting at the Durham Congregational Church, 773 Royalsborough Road, corner of routes 9 and 136. Registration is from 9-10 a.m. The fee is $10 or 10 non-perishable food items. Kids under 12 are half price.

Participants take a self-guided ride through Durham, Lisbon, Lisbon Falls and Bowdoin, the towns served by the food pantry. Road-Ride-Riddle is to be solved by following the designated route, where the answers to three questions can be found. The ride will end at the food pantry, located at the MTM Center, School Street (next to the United Methodist Church), in Lisbon Falls, where tours of the facility, free refreshments, and a wide range of prizes will be drawn by participants who have completed the three questions and have entered their names for the drawing starting at 11:45 a.m. Participants must be present to have their names drawn. Durham Night at Sea Dogs

On Friday, June 6, it will be Durham Night at Hadlock Field in Portland as the Portland Sea Dogs take on the Bowie Bay Sox. Durham club hosting Bean fishing derby

L.L. Bean will hold its annual fishing derby Saturday, June 7, from 8-11 a.m., at the Durham Rod and Gun Club on Pound Road.

The derby is open to children and grandchildren of employees and retirees, ages 3-11, as well children ages 3-12 who live in Durham, Freeport, Pownal and Yarmouth. All children must be accompanied by an adult, and the derby will be held regardless of weather. Derby rules state no reels or overhead casting. Kids can bring a pole with a line, hooks, bobbers, worms and sinkers. Prizes will be awarded to the various age groups for biggest fish, most fish (in total weight) and first fish caught.

Food pantry benefit set

The Freeport Lioness-Lions Club is holding a food drive to benefit Freeport Community Services food pantry, Saturday, June 14, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., at Shaw’s Supermarket in Freeport. Donations of non-perishable food items and/or money will be accepted. Those who need items picked up should call Kelly at 751-5878 or email fllclub@comcast.net.

Rent Eureka Center

The Durham Eureka Community Center is available for rent. The maximum amount of people the hall holds for an event is 50. Contact Nancy Decker at 751-1323 or the Town Office at 353-2561

Cribbage, couponing

The Durham Eureka Community Center, corner of Route 9 and Route 136, hosts cribbage every Tuesday from 9 a.m.-noon.

Couponing for the Community meets at the Community Center every other Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. It is a chance to learn couponing basics including where/how to find and collect coupons; how to organize them; and how to begin using them. Pat Provost heads this project with the hopes that some of the skills acquired will be used to give back to the community by helping families in need.

Food pantry

The Lisbon Area Christian Outreach (LACO) food pantry, which serves the towns of Durham, Bowdoin, and Lisbon Falls, is open Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m.-noon and Saturday from 8-10 a.m. The LACO Food Pantry is located at the Marion T. Morse School on School Street, Lisbon Falls. The parking lot is behind the Lisbon United Methodist Church, off Berry Avenue. There is also a free clothing bank.
