BIDDEFORD — Barrett Johnson, store manager of the Biddeford Hannaford Supermarket, recently presented Biddeford Primary School Assistant Principal Barbara Adriance with a check for $1,000 through the Hannaford Helps Schools program.

Overall, Hannaford Supermarkets has distributed checks for more than $500,000 to K-12 schools in New England and New York through the Hannaford Helps Schools program in 2014.

Customers triggered the donations by purchasing eligible products.

Schools use the donations for whatever items students need locally, whether that is new computers, musical instruments, sports gear, field trips or playground equipment.

Since its inception, Hannaford Helps Schools has raised more than $8.5 million for schools in New England and New York.
