BIDDEFORD — Anyone who is curious about some of the secret, tucked away places in Biddeford will have a chance to check them out on Saturday. Places like the mill lagoon at the Pepperell Mill Campus, the city hall clock tower and the car company Motorland Vintage America are on this year’s Secret Spaces/Historic Places tour ”“ and tickets are still available.

For the fifth year, the downtown revitalization organization Heart of Biddeford will host this popular fundraiser, which gives the public a chance to see places that are usually closed to the public.

Those who participate in the self-paced tour are provided a map of the tour locations, most of which can be viewed any time from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

At each location, volunteers will be stationed to provide historical knowledge as well as some little-known trivia about the sites.

For those who have been on the tour in previous years, HOB Executive Director Delilah Poupore urges them to come again.

“This year has some new attractions,” she said. These include places like the former St. Joseph’s Church rectory and the former site of the Maine Energy Recovery Company waste-to-energy incinerator.

Other added highlights include Biddeford High School students of Carolyn Gosselin, who will be dressed in period costumes and provide entertainment at some of the stops on the tour.

For instance, said Poupore, students will dress as flappers from the 1920s and dance at Motorland; at the clock tower, some will perform a rap song about Eva Gray, the ghost of city hall; some students will dress as mill workers to give a historical perspective at the former Maine Energy site, while others will talk about the possible future of the site.

Currently the Maine Energy site is empty; the incinerator and associated buildings have been removed and the city is doing clean-up work and searching for a developer.

However, said Poupore, she said she thinks people will still find it interesting despite the emptiness of the lot.

“A lot of people haven’t seen the river there,” she said.

In addition, said Poupore, Economic Development Director Daniel Stevenson will be on hand to discuss the site’s potential and what kind of development may eventually be located there.

Another new part of the tour, at an extra cost, that Poupore said she’s excited about, is a boat and bus tour.

Part of that trip will take place on a boat traveling the Saco River. There will be a stop at the University of New England where a student will lead a tour of some of the interesting and historic sites at the school; then a bus will take participants on a historic tour of Biddeford Pool.

Secret Spaces/Historic Places will take place Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased online at BrownPaperTickets.com, or from the Heart of Biddeford office, 205 Main St., Suite 103 in Biddeford during office hours, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets are $20 for the Downtown/Lagoon Tour, or $40 for the Downtown/Lagoon + Boat/Bus/UNE Tour. The day of the event, tickets can be purchased at the Heart of Biddeford office. Those purchasing tickets for the 11 a.m. bus/boat tour can buy them at Rumery’s boat yard on Water Street.

All proceeds from this event fund Heart of Biddeford’s operating expenses.
