Wawrinka upset at 1st round of French Open

PARIS (AP) — Stan Wawrinka lost his first Grand Slam match since becoming a major champion, falling 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 to 41st-ranked Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain in the first round of the French Open on Monday.

The Australian Open champion had 61 unforced errors on center court and won only 54 percent of the points on his first serve.

Earlier, Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova successfully dealt with the wet weather and their opponents.

Djokovic beat Joao Sousa of Portugal 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 despite being broken three times, including while serving for the match for the first time.

Sharapova, the 2012 champion, was first on court in the main stadium and needed little more than an hour to beat Ksenia Pervak 6-1, 6-2

Eight-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal improved his record at Roland Garros to 60-1 by beating Robby Ginepri of the United States 6-0, 6-3, 6-0.

Ibaka expects to play in game 4

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Thunder forward Serge Ibaka said his strained left calf is fine and he expects to play Tuesday in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals.

Ibaka came back from what was thought to be a season-ending injury to play 30 minutes in Game 3 against San Antonio. He had 15 points, seven rebounds and four blocks to spark Oklahoma City to a 106-97 victory over the Spurs that trimmed its deficit to 2-1.

Mets fire hitting coach, cut Valverde

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets fired hitting coach Dave Hudgens and cut reliever Jose Valverde after a 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Minor league hitting coordinator Lamar Johnson will take over for Hudgens.

The 57-year-old Hudgens was in his fourth season as the Mets’ hitting coach. The Mets began the day with a .237 batting average, ranking among the worst in the majors.

New York has lost nine of its last 12 games, scoring just 32 runs in that span.

Caps hire Trotz as coach

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Capitals hired former Nashville Predators coach Barry Trotz and promoted Brian MacLellan to general manager.

Trotz was the Predators’ coach for 15 seasons before being let go in April. In Washington, he takes over for Adam Oates, who was fired last month after the Capitals missed the playoffs for the first time in seven years.

MacLellan replaces George McPhee, whose contract was not renewed after 17 seasons with the Capitals.

Indy 500 champ nets huge payday

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Ryan Hunter-Reay’s Indianapolis 500 win earned him a $2.49 million payday.

Hunter-Reay edged Helio Castroneves by 0.060 seconds Sunday in the second-closest margin of victory in the history of the race. He became the first American to win the Indy 500 since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006.

Castroneves earned more than $785,000.
