FREEPORT – Chandler Vincent and Liam Gallagher like to socialize after school at the Port Teen Center in Freeport, so it’s natural that they would participate in an event that raises funds for the facility.

Vincent and Gallagher, sophomores at Freeport High School, some of their friends, as well as adults who appreciate what the teen center offers to area youth, will participate in the Sunday to Sundae Trot for Teens 5K on June 1. Ben & Jerry’s, L.L. Bean and Bath Savings Institution are the sponsors.

Michael Meyers, director of Regional School Unit 5 Recreation & Community Education, said that the Sunday to Sundae race, plus an L.L. Bean kayak package raffle, is as much about community as it is fundraising. Meyers said organizers hope to raise perhaps $2,000 in a kayak raffle and $1,000 from the road race, which begins at 9 a.m. There is also a children’s fun run.

Vincent and Gallagher say the teen center is a great place to hang out and play games like cards or pool or table tennis. They like that it is centrally located in town.

They told Daryn DuShane, teen center coordinator, that they can be themselves when they’re away from school and it’s easy for their parents to pick them up.

“They feel lucky to have it because it isn’t easy to get everyone together at someone’s house or it may not be allowed,” DuShane said. “The allows kids to congregate after school or relax.”

The Sunday to Sundae Trot will begin and end at the Freeport Community Center, located at 53 Depot St. Following the race, all participants will have the opportunity to make their own Ben & Jerry’s ice cream sundaes, and there will be awards to the top three finishers in each age category for both males and females.

The teen center will be open during the race and runners and spectators alike will have the opportunity to check it out.

Ben & Jerry’s is supplying free ice cream to people who run the race. L.L. Bean is furnishing the kayak, paddle and life jacket, while Bath Savings is supplying T-shirts.

Myers said there are 100 available raffle tickets at $20 apiece. Pre-registration for the road race is $20 and same-day regisrration is $25. Those interested can register at www.runningforfree.com.

“We’re not trying to make a huge amount of money off the race,” Meyers said. “It’s a way to get people out and having fun.
