BIDDEFORD — Alex Quigley hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift host Biddeford over South Portland 5-4 in an SMAA softball game at Doran Field on Wednesday.
The Red Riots (9-3) got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, a lead they held until the fifth, when the Tigers (9-2) plated two runs of their own to take a 3-2 lead.
South Portland went ahead 4-3 in the top of the seventh, setting the stage for Quigley’s heroics.
Charlotte White had a pair of hits for the Tigers, while Kirsten Lebreux gave up seven hits over seven innings to earn the win.
WELLS 6, YORK 5
WELLS — Wells broke up a tie game with a game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to beat rival York 6-5 in a WMC softball game on Wednesday.
The Warriors led 5-1 after three innings, thanks to an RBI double from Maddie Taylor and a two-run home run by Lauren Bame in the third, but the Wildcats rallied with four runs combined in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Bame tossed an eight-hit complete game with strikeouts and no walks to earn the win.
THORNTON 12, MARSHWOOD 0
SOUTH BERWICK — Thornton Academy cranked out 15 hits and got contributions from everyone in the lineup as the Trojans routed host Marshwood 12-0 in an SMAA softball game on Wednesday.
Brooke Cross went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and Morgan Dube went 3-for-4 with four runs and two RBIs to pace the Thornton offense.
Bailey Tremblay scattered six hits over seven innings to earn the win, striking out eight batters while walking just one.
Girls Tennis
SANFORD 3, MASSABESIC 2
WATERBORO — Sanford got dominant wins from its No. 2 and No. 3 singles players, and a straight-sets win in No. 1 doubles to edge rival Massabesic 3-2 in an SMAA girls tennis match on Wednesday.
Misa Mai blanked Massabesic’s Haley Monroe 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles, while Paige Tranchemontagne dropped just one game in defeating Janelle Boisvert.
Sanford’s No. 1 doubles team of Lauren MacPherson and Ciara Negron gave the Spartans the winning point as they topped McKenzi Stevens and Melissa Carmichael 6-2, 6-2.
The Mustangs got wins in No. 1 singles ”“ Brianna Missick over Kathryn Doiron, 6-2, 6-1 ”“ and No. 2 doubles ”“ Acadia Byther and Sydney Pepin 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 winners over Corinne Lawrence and Grace Hansen.
Girls Lacrosse
SANFORD 22, NOBLE 6 (Tuesday)
SANFORD — Liz Helmreich scored a game-high five goals as Sanford beat Noble 22-6 in an SMAA girls lacrosse game on Tuesday afternoon.
Courtney Dumont, Maddy Leigh and Emily Salls also scored three goals apiece for the Spartans (3-5), who led 12-5 at halftime.
