OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The Old Orchard Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting its first J-1 Seasonal Workforce Educational Conference on Thursday, May 29 from 8 a.m. to noon.
The meeting will be held at the Salvation Army Fellowship Hall in Old Orchard Beach. Local businesses hire more than 450 foreign workers to supplement the seasonal workforce each year.
The conference will feature speakers from U.S. Department of State, Maine Department of Labor, Social Security Administration as well as Old Orchard Beach Town officials, all of whom will be providing the latest regulations, requirements and resources available.
There will be an opportunity to meet representatives from many sponsoring organizations who connect international students with employers and housing providers.
A second conference, more specific to the J-1 worker, will be held in late June and will focus on the resources available to the seasonal worker. All foreign workers who are in town will be invited.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
