SANFORD — For one game, the University of Maine baseball team called Goodall Park in Sanford home. And the Black Bears certainly made themselves right at home at the cozy confines of Goodall, as they cranked out 12 runs on 17 hits in a 12-3 victory over Boston College Tuesday.

The game was a homecoming of sorts for 12 players combined between the two teams, as they returned to the field they called home while playing for the Sanford Mainers.

“We really love playing here. I just enjoy this place,” said UMaine head coach Steve Trimper. “It’s almost like our home away from home.”

Those former Mainers were featured heavily in the winning effort for the Black Bears. Former Mainer Charlie Butler started the game for Maine and gave up just one hit and one walk in two innings.

When Butler’s day came to an end, the Maine offense went to work. Former Mainer Troy Black led off the bottom of the second inning with a double, and four batters later came home ”“ along with another former Mainer, Brian Doran ”“ on a bases-loaded double by Luke Morrill. The Black Bears plated three more runs in the inning on a misplayed fielder’s choice and two singles to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

“We had a lot of energy coming in here. A lot of guys ”¦ played here, too. This place means a lot to a lot of those guys,” said Black. “We all came out with a lot of energy and wanted to do exactly what we did.”

Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes came on in relief for Maine in the third and gave up two runs on three hits and an error, but settled down and gave up just one more run over his final five innings of work.

There was no settling down for the Black Bear bats, as Maine scored three runs in the third and two more in the fourth to extend the lead to 10-2.

“We’ve just been working really hard the last two weeks at just attacking fastballs, we need to attack fastballs, and these guys came at us with a lot of fastballs. The other thing that helped us out is their pitchers were behind in counts,” Trimper said about what made the offense so successful.

The Black Bears scored single runs in the sixth and eighth as the Eagles trotted out a new pitcher each inning after starter Justin Dunn lasted just two innings. Former Marshwood standout Luke Fernandes pitched a scoreless seventh after stranding a pair of baserunners.

Every Maine batter except Doran (who went 0-3) recorded multiple hits, although Doran did make his presence felt by scoring two runs after drawing a walk and getting hit by a pitch. Black tallied a team-high three hits and scored a pair of runs, while Nick Bernardo scored four times. A pair of Mainers from last summer, Sam Balzano and Scott Heath, each had two hits and combined for five RBIs.

“We’re getting contributions from a lot of different players, and that’s what we need to do in order to make a good run in the conference tournament,” said Trimper. “The guys have been doing a lot right the last few games.”

Black said that it was nice for the team to put on a show the way they did for fans that don’t usually get to see Maine play. And doing it at a park he cherishes made it that much better.

“To come down here, you get a different group of people, and just expand Maine baseball a little bit, and get a little more support down here,” said Black. “It’s good to see some familiar faces. It’s just like home.”
