Food train to roll

Trinity Lutheran Church is sponsoring its third annual “Climb Aboard the Food Train,” a citywide food drive for the Westbrook Food Pantry.

Church members have placed money jars and food boxes in business establishments and churches all over Westbrook. Money and food will be collected until mid-May.

On the weekend of May 16-18, a food train will pick up the food and money, which will be taken to the food pantry at the Westbrook Community Center.

On Saturday, May 17, the train will also be parked at the bicentennial skateboard park near Hannaford and in the parking lot at Shaw’s.

Many of the elderly, children, disabled, unemployed and underemployed people in the community go to the pantry on a regular basis in order to have enough to eat.

“The pantry does a wonderful job, but their resources are limited and their shelves are often sparse,” the church said in a statement. “For those of us who are blessed with abundance, giving to those in need can make a huge difference in the lives of the poor.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine hosted its 15th annual pizza decorating and ice cream contest recently at The Root Cellar in Portland to honor volunteers. Displaying their pizza design are Little Brother Troy Levesque of Westbrook, 9, and Big Brother Alen Saric of Portland. Saric, originally from Bosnia, moved to Maine as a high school freshman and credits his own mentors for his success and, in turn, decided to get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Levesque and Saric are celebrating their one-year- match anniversary this month.
