WELLS — A new series of books has been published by the Maine Coastal Program, with assistance from the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, detailing how to access the Maine coast.
The Maine Coastal Access Guide includes three editions for southern Maine (South Berwick to Freeport), Midcoast (Brunswick to Hampton), and Downeast (Bangor to Calais).
“These guides feature more than 700 special places along Maine’s 5,300 miles of shoreline,” said Paul Dest, director of the Wells Reserve, who helped edit the three volumes. “They describe public access to sandy beaches, nature areas, hiking paths and boat launches,” Dest added.
Each edition includes site descriptions, maps, photos, directions, parking information, cultural and natural features, facilities and amenities, interesting facts and geographic coordinates.
Numerous organizations and individuals were involved in collecting and verifying the information. Dest and Kathleen Leyden, Maine Coastal Program director, co-edited the series.
The Maine Coastal Access Guide is available for purchase at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm, online, or through the mail. Each edition costs $8 and the three-volume set is $20.
