RICHMOND (AP) — Law enforcement was acting on a tip Monday from a 24-year-old man being held in jail when they found his father’s dead body in a wooded area near the Kennebec River, according to Maine state police.
Leroy Smith was being held in Cumberland County jail on an unrelated charge when he gave information leading a Sagadahoc County deputy to the body of 56-year-old Leroy Smith II, of Gardiner, according to state police spokesman Steve McCausland. He said Smith’s death has been ruled suspicious.
McCausland declined to say how the son had the information that led to the tip and it was unclear when Smith died.
Smith was arrested Monday morning on a fugitive warrant from Massachusetts, according to a jail official.
The Portland Press Herald reported that police searched the Gardiner apartment that the two men shared and talked to the men’s neighbors Monday. The apartment building was guarded by a police officer and a trash bin was marked with yellow crime scene tape.
No charges have been filed. McCausland said a medical examiner would release the results of an autopsy Tuesday at the earliest. He declined to give the condition of the body.
