KENNEBUNK — A Kennebunk firefighter is in good condition after an explosion knocked him off a ladder while responding to a chemical incident at the Kennebunk Sewer District on Monday.
The fire department, along with the York County Emergency Management Agency and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard haz-mat teams, were called to the sewer district after employees there mixed two chemicals inadvertently, according to Kennebunk Fire Chief Stephen Nichols.
An explosion occurred as a member of one of the haz-mat teams was testing to determine what gases were being produced by the chemical mixture, according to Nichols. The affected officer was sent to the hospital as a precaution, but is doing well, he said.
Kennebunk police also responded, to ascertain whether evacuation was needed, according to Lt. Daniel Jones, but evacuation was not deemed necessary.
