Bean Supper

A baked bean supper will be held at Friends Church, Route 202, Windham on Saturday, May 3, from 5-6:30 p.m. The menu includes beans, brown bread, salads, pies, coffee and punch. $7 for adults, $1 for children under 12.

May Fair

On Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., the May Fair will be held at Windham Hill UCC with plants, a lawn sale, books, bake sale, lunch. Also, visit the historic church and take home some bargains.

Attention Veterans

The Field-Allen American Legion Post 148 coordinates Memorial Day events for the town and is seeking veterans, particularly World War II vets, to participate in this special day. For those who cannot or are reluctant to walk/march in the parade, rides will be provided. Help make this an extra special event and contact Post Adjutant Dave Tanguay at 892-1306 for more information. This year, the parade will include the fife & drum unit from the 3rd Maine, Co. A Civil War Re-enactors who will be camped out all weekend at the historical society. Many events are planned for the Windham Veterans Center on Memorial Day. Free lunch provided.

Yard Sale

On Saturday, May 3, Windham Historical Society will hold its first yard sale of the season. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and items include household goods, furniture, old and new items and all at low, low prices. This is a fundraiser for the Society’s Village Green historic park. Community Supper

On Saturday, May 3, from 4:30-6 p.m., a community supper will be held at the White Rock Community Club, Wilson Road, Gorham. On the menu, baked beans, hot dogs, mac and cheese, coleslaw, potato salad, homemade biscuits, pie and shortcake; coffee and punch. Served buffet style. $8 per person; under 12, $4.

American Legion Auxiliary

American Legion Auxiliary Post 148 will meet on Monday, May 5, at 6 p.m. at the Windham Veterans Center.

Legion Meets

American Legion Field-Allen Post 148 will be holding its May social and business meeting at the Windham Veterans Center on Wednesday, May 7. A working party will meet at 4 p.m. to assemble flags, followed by the traditional supper and social at 5 p.m. Prior to the 6 p.m. business meeting, new officers for 2014-15 will be installed by the 2nd District Commander. A busy night includes planning for the May 10 bean supper and final preparation for Memorial Day events. Please make every effort to attend.

VFW Meets

The Windham VFW Post 10643 will meet at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14 at Windham Veterans Center. Note the business meeting will start at 5 p.m. sharp; installation of officers will start at 5:30 p.m., followed by supper. The Veterans Center is located behind the Windham Mall (Hannaford’s). Take Veterans Memorial Drive by Friendly’s and follow to the end

Community Meal

On Saturday, May 24 from 4:30-6 p.m., a free community meal will be served at Christ Chapel, Northern Pines Road, Raymond. The surrounding communities are welcome. This is open to all ages. Food will be continually served, buffet style and includes chicken cacciatore, casseroles, salads, chicken noodle soup, desserts and beverages. There is no charge.

Library Hours changing

Beginning the week of Monday, May 5, Windham library hours will be from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday; from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. These hours will remain the same year-round.

Democrats Meet

Windham Democratic Town Committee will meet on Monday, May 12, at 7 p.m. at the Windham Public Library. The Windham Democratic Town Committee meets the second Monday of each month 7-8 p.m. in the Windham Public Library.

Medicare Help

On Tuesdays, May 6 and 20, the Southern Maine Agency on Aging (SMAA) will offer a Medicare seminar and counseling for the Lakes Region at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church at 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. A “Welcome to Medicare” seminar is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon. In addition to the Medicare seminar, there will be one-on-one counseling with volunteer Medicare advocates available from 9 a.m. to noon. The seminar and counseling are intended to help you sort through your Medicare options, answer questions and to help you enroll. In addition to Medicare assistance, counseling on tax and rent rebate, food stamps, and fuel assistance can be arranged. Please call the Southern Maine Agency on Aging to register for an upcoming seminar or to make a one-on-one appointment with a Medicare Advocate at 396-6500 or 1-800-427-7411. Seminar walk-ins can usually be accommodated. Further opportunities for these services will occur monthly on the first and third Tuesdays at the same times and location. Land Trust

Windham Land Trust will meet on Wednesday, May 7, at 7 p.m. at the Windham Public Library. The public is welcome. The Land Trust has regular meetings the first Wednesday of every month.

Bean Supper

The American Legion Post 148 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10643 will hold a baked bean supper on Saturday, May 10, from 5-6:30 p.m. at Windham Veterans Center located behind Hannaford at the end of Veteran’s Memorial Drive, which is beside Friendly’s. Price is $8 per person. Children under 8 free. Proceeds from the supper will help pay for upgrading the parking lot. The menu includes several types of beans, hot dogs, casseroles, cole slaw, potato salad, rolls and pies.

Help the Clothes Closet

Items currently needed include linens (towels, sheets, blankets), men’s jeans, girls’ dresses (sizes 6-14) and socks of all sizes. If you can help, kindly drop off from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Thursday at the Windham Food Pantry which is located in the Human Services Building, next to the Public Safety Building and across from Friends meetinghouse on Route 202.

Plants Needed

Windham Historical Society wants your extra plants. The Society is holding its annual plant sale fundraiser on Saturday, May 24, from 8-5 p.m. at the museum headquarters, Windham Center Road. The historical gardeners are seeking donation of extra plants you may have – when you’re cleaning out your flower gardens and hedges, remember to call 892-1433 and leave a message or e-mail info@windhamhistorical.org. Electronic Recycling

On Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Windham Hill UCC will host an Electronic Recycling Day at Windham Mall. All towns can participate. Items accepted include TVs, computers, monitors, hard drives, laptops, printers, cordless and cell phones, VCR, DVD audio equipment, stereos, speakers. No household appliances. Money donations accepted upon entry to cover cost of organizing the event and to support local church mission needs.

In the face of high energy and plowing costs, furnace problems, and frozen pipes, the Stone Dog Café closed on April 27, after nearly three years in business. On the popular North Windham breakfast and lunch spot’s final day of business, customers traveled to 862 Roosevelt Trail from as far away as Massachusetts, according to owner Sarah Plummer. “It was just one horrible setback after another all winter long,” Plummer said. “I’m absolutely heartbroken.”
