BOARD DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE: The Southern Midcoast Maine Chamber’s 2nd Annual Hacker’s Ball Golf Tournament is coming up on May 9 at the Bath Country Club. The proceeds from this tournament will benefit the chamber’s region area high school Scholarship Fund which includes Brunswick, Mt. Ararat, Morse, Wiscasset, Richmond and the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA).

YEA is a program that educates students, between the ages of 11 and 18, through the process of launching an operational business or social movement over the course of an academic year. By the end of the class, students own and operate fully-formed and functioning businesses, which may be carried on after their graduation from the program.

For the second consecutive year, our event sponsor, showing great support for our community’s students, is FairPoint Communications.

This year the chamber’s young professionals group, the Mid Coast Edge, will be running the tournament. As young professionals of the Mid-coast area, we want to get involved to help educate and retain the youth of our community. The Hacker’s Ball raises money for the Scholarship Fund and is a great way for us and you to start getting involved in the future and longevity of the Mid-coast region.

The Mid Coast Edge membership is open to any person between the ages of 21 and 40ish who lives or works in the Midcoast region and consider themselves a professional in their field. The only membership fee for the Mid Coast Edge is the interest to get involved.

As one of the first tournaments of the year, the Hacker’s Ball is a great opportunity for you to dust off your clubs, your swing, and get ready for the 2014 golf season. The Hacker’s Ball will be in the foursome scrambleformatwitha9a.m.shotgun start. Registration is set to begin at 8 a.m.

As the name implies, “Hacker’s” Ball is meant for all skill levels. It’s the perfect time to see if golf is the sport for you, or to warm up for the area’s coming tournaments. We have a number of great prizes lined up, including a new grill provided by Lowe’s, a TV provided by Best Buy, dinner at Ebenezer’s in Brunswick, tickets to a show at the Maine State Music Theatre and many others.

For those golfers who may not play their “A” game, we have golf lessons from the Bath Country Club for the highest scoring team. We may even throw in a wacky contest; you’ll have to come to see. The goal is for all participants to simply enjoy the day and know they’re supporting a great cause.

There are still a few spots open for teams. Sponsorship opportunities are open until May 1 with golf cart sponsorships at only $75. If you’re interested in sponsoring or playing, please contact the Mid Coast Edge at midcoastedge@midcoastmaine.com. We look forward to an amazing day with fun, golf, and hopefully some sun. After the long winter we’ve all just been through, I think we’ve all earned a day on the golf course.

Amanda Leland, Long Cove Builders, SMMC board director and member of Mid Coast Edge.
