Comedy ‘Romeo’ at Pine Tree Academy
Pine Tree Academy Drama will perform its first full-length play, “The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet,” Saturday, May 3, at 8 p.m. The performances, a comical twist on Shakespeare’s tragic love story, is directed by Josh Dayen, dean of men, and Brianna Payne, a science teacher at the school. Romeo will be played by Avery Audet, a senior, and Juliet will be played by Haley Johnson, a junior. Adult tickets are $5. Children 12 and under are free.
Free movie at Nordica Theatre
On Wednesday, April 30, Freeport residents can enjoy a free movie at the Nordica Theatre at 1 Village Station. Proceeds will benefit the Freeport Middle School Sports Boosters Club. Donations will be accepted at the theater. Proof of residence in the form of a license, ID or school ID is required to receive a free ticket to any available showtime.
First Friday features Not Too Shaap
The popular acoustic group, Not Too Shaap, will perform at Freeport’s final First Friday event of the season, Friday, May 2, at the Freeport Community Center. The hour-long concert, which starts at 6 p.m., will be followed by a three-course dinner provided by Tom Hincks and the Jameson Tavern of Freeport. Not Too Shaap features classic and contemporary covers and original songs. The dinner will include soup, a surf and turf entre?e and dessert.

Freeport First Fridays are a joint project of MASISTA (Maryellen and Sam In Support of The Arts) and the Freeport Community Services, building community with good food, good music and good neighbors.
Peaks Island author to speak
Eleanor Morse, author of “White Dog Fell from the Sky,” will be at Freeport Community Library for a book talk and signing, Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m. Morse’s earlier novels, “An Unexpected Forest” and “Chopin’s Garden,” were well received by readers. Her latest book, “White Dog Fell from the Sky,” published in 2013, takes place in Botswana in 1976. The audience will have an opportunity to learn more about the novel and about Morse’s four years living, traveling and working with refugees in Africa. “White Dog Fell from the Sky” was one of O Magazine’s “16 Must Read Books” in 2013.
Light refreshments will be served, and she will sign books that will be available for purchase.

Plant sale coming up
The annual Wolfe’s Neck Farm plant sale will be held on Saturday, May 17, rain or shine, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at Wolfe’s Neck Farm, 184 Burnett Road, Freeport.
A large selection of perennials, annuals, herbs and seedlings, from full shade to full sun, will be available. All plants are donated by volunteers, friends and neighbors. There are plants for the beginning gardener and those with green thumbs. Proceeds support Wolfe’s Neck Farm, a nonprofit that provides educational and recreational opportunities for area residents.
Anyone wishing to donate plants should bring them to the farm on Friday, May 16, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Community chorus to celebrate ‘Sun Moon Stars Rain’
The Greater Freeport Community Chorus will celebrate spring with performances in Freeport and Cumberland on Saturday, May 3, and Sunday, May 4. Led by Director Virgil Bozeman and accompanist Dorothy Cuprak, the 65-member chorus will present a dozen pieces in a concert titled “Sun Moon Stars Rain.”
The chorus, whose members hail from 20 midcoast towns, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Tuttle Road United Methodist Church, 52 Tuttle Road, Cumberland, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, at the First Parish Church Congregational, 40 Main St., Freeport. Admission is $10 for adults, with anyone 18 or younger admitted free and a per-family maximum of $25. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at Music & Moore, 220 Bath Road, Brunswick, or the Freeport Community Center, 53 Depot St.

Woman’s Club plans bazaar
Freeport Woman’s Club will hold a Spring Bazaar on Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at St. Jude’s Church, 134 Main St., Freeport, across from Key Bank. Plants, baked goods, gift baskets, attic treasures and collectibles will be for sale. The proceeds will benefit the Freeport Woman’s Club’s charitable works, including donations to Freeport Community Services, community improvements and educational scholarships.
Youth Chorale to perform
The Wescustago Youth Chorale invites the public to its 16th annual spring concert, “A Celebration of Spring,” on Sunday, May 4, at 4 p.m., at the Freeport Performing Arts Center.
Tickets at the door are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors 65 and older. Graduating seniors will be recognized at the concert, and a reception will follow the program. Wescustago Youth Chorale is an 80-voice auditioned children’s choir for ages 8 to 18, with singers from 12 area towns, including Freeport, Yarmouth, Cumberland, North Yarmouth, Bath, Brunswick, Portland, Pownal and more. Band concert features grades 7-12
A concert featuring instrumentalists from grades 7-12 in Freeport Middle School, Durham Community School and Freeport High School, will take place on Thursday, May 1, at 7 p.m., in the Freeport Performing Arts Center, 30 Holbrook St.
Directors Sue Olmstead, Erin York and David Watts have planned a program of classic band literature mixed with recent compositions, pop arrangements and traditional marches. Admission is free.
Parade planning
Plans are under way for Freeport’s annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony.

Novelist Lily King speaks Friday
Author Lily King, who lives in Yarmouth, will read from and talk about her books as part of the Meet the Author series sponsored by Friends of the Freeport Community Library Friday, May 2, at 7 p.m., at the library.
King’s three novels have each received rave reviews and critical acclaim. “Father of the Rain,” her third book, was a New York Times Editors’ Choice, winner of the 2010 New England Book Award for Fiction and the 2011 Maine Literary Award for fiction. Set in Nixon-era New England, it is the story of a woman’s lifelong loyalty to her father and the magnetic pull of family.
“The Pleasing Hour,” King’s first novel, was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and an alternate for the PEN/Hemingway Award. Her second book, “The English Teacher,” was a Publishers Weekly Top Ten Best Novel of the Year and a Chicago Tribune Best Book of the Year.
King’s latest novel, “Euphoria,” loosely based on events in the life of anthropologist Margaret Mead, will be published in June.

Restaurant aids playground fund
The Tuscan Bistro at 140 Main St. in Freeport will donate 10 percent of sales on Wednesday, April 30, to the Mast Landing School playground fund. There will be a 50/50 raffle and chances to win gift certificates to the Grill, the Bistro and Olympia Sports.
