A recent report on the security fence at the Biddeford Municipal Airport stated that the city’s share of the cost would be about $17,000. It also mentioned projects to be done in the future, but didn’t specify what the costs would be. These projects are listed in literature distributed at airport commission meetings. Here’s a look at some of the proposed costs: In 2015, obstruction removal at Runway 6, $300,000. City share: $15,000. In 2017, obstruction removal at Runway 24 end, $230,000. City share: $11,500. In 2018, design and reconstruct Runway 6/24 lighting and Runway 6 safety area, total cost $1,200,000. City share: $60,000. In 2019, master plan update and wildlife hazard site visit, cost $150,000. City share: $7,500.
I believe the taxpayers of Biddeford need to see what this first step will lead to. There was even talk by the Federal Aviation Administration that when the master plan is updated, plans to expand the airport can be discussed.
Taxpayers need to contact their councilors.
