Eighth-grader named state student ambassador

Madison Damon, an eighth-grade student at Westbrook Middle School, will represent Maine at the Student Ambassador National Summit at Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Texas this summer.

Damon was selected as the state’s ambassador for the program “Fuel Up to Play 60.” She will go to Texas July 14-17 in a trip with all expenses paid.

The program was founded by the National Dairy Council and the National Football League in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Debbie Damon said her daughter’s selection is posted on the Westbrook Middle School’s web page.

Madison has been a student ambassador for two years at the middle school and was selected from a search of more than 1,000 applicants to participate nationally. Damon will work with NFL players and other ambassadors to learn teamwork and leadership skills to help lead healthy changes in the Westbrook School and others across the nation.

Michelle Higgins is Damon’s physical education instructor at the middle school and initiated the “Fuel Up” program at the school. Higgins described Damon as a tireless worker and a true leader who always strives to give her best.

“I taught Madison in class last semester,” Higgins said. “In PE class, Madison was a model student. She was a strong female both physically and mentally.”

Higgins said Damon has worked hard to help the school be healthier and more active.

“She will be a wonderful representative of the city of Westbrook and the state of Maine at the National Summit this summer,” Higgins said.
