WESTBROOK – At a Westbrook City Council and School Committee joint workshop on Monday, the final budget figures for fiscal year 2014-15 call for no change to the current property tax rate.
The Westbrook City Council is set to hold a first reading of the fiscal year 2014-15 school and municipal budgets at its April 28 meeting. A final vote could come as early as May 5. If approved by the City Council, the school budget would go before Westbrook voters on June 10.
Next year’s municipal budget sits at $23,400,605, and while it represents a roughly $300,000 increase from this year, increased revenue and property valuation shifts have the city’s portion of the tax rate falling by 9 cents.
With the school budget of $33,854,745 set for final School Committee approval on Wednesday, the overall increase of 0.79 percent represents a 7-cent increase to the tax rate.
Combined with a 2-cent tax rate increase caused by an increase in Westbrook’s county portion, the final property tax rate represents no change from this year, which was $17.20 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.
For fiscal year 2013-14, the Westbrook tax rate fell 20 cents, and during the previous year remained flat.
In a memo to city councilors and school committee members, City Administrator Jerre Bryant said, “Given the many factors impacting spending and revenue for local governments in Maine, three years of level, down, and level tax rates is a tremendous accomplishment for the Westbrook taxpayers.”
