The Thornton Academy Math Team won third place at the Maine State Math Meet, held in Bangor on April 8. The state competition included six individual rounds, two relay rounds, and two team rounds. Nearly 100 schools attended the meet.

Coached by math teacher Marsha Snyder, 10 students from Thornton Academy competed. Snyder has been coaching students for the last six years.

“As a student I competed and loved the experience of traveling to math competitions at other schools,” said Snyder. “Thornton hadn’t been involved in those events in many years, and I wanted to bring back that option for students who love math. It is a terrific place for day and residential students to come together and speak our common language of mathematics!” she said.

Snyder was one of 14 nominees for the 2014 Maine Teacher of the Year Award.

Xinyi (Lucy) Chen, a junior, won first place overall in the state for 2013-2014 and was presented a silver bowl and a $300 cash prize. Tristan Falardeau, a sophomore, earned fifth place and Zihan (Winkle) Qi, a senior, earned a 12-th place medal.
