BIDDEFORD — Seven different players scored two goals apiece as No. 13 Colby College defeated the University of New England, 18-6, in non-conference women’s lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon at the Big Blue Turf.
The nationally-ranked Mules (5-3) used a seven-goal run late in the first half to gain separation from the Nor’easters (6-4). Through a little more than 20 minutes, the visitors held a slim 4-3 advantage, but extended it to 11-5 at the halftime break.
Colby junior Abby Hatch finished with a match-high five points on two goals and three assists, and had a game-best five draw controls to help establish a 16-9 cushion in the category. Also scoring twice was senior Alex Mintz, juniors Lindsay McCabe and Sara Miller, sophomores Abby Hooper and Dana Swaffield and first-year Cassie Rodgers. Senior Sarah Lux dished out four assists.
Three goalies split the time between the pipes for the Mules. Senior Michelle Burt made four stops over the initial 30 minutes, junior Claire Dickson turned away four shots during the next 18:18 and sophomore Sarah Evans posted two saves in the final 11:42. Seniors Katharine Eddy and Kirsten Karis helped the defensive effort with three caused turnovers each. Eddy also chipped in with a goal and two assists on offense.
For UNE, senior Hannah Tavella and junior Hannah Warren both scored a pair of goals, and juniors Gina Newsome and Rachel Schwaner also found the back of the cage for Big Blue. Schwaner had team-highs of three draw controls and three ground balls.
The Nor’easters received six saves out of sophomore starting goalie Lauryn Huck, who then gave way to classmate Courtney Kendall for the entire second half. Kendall denied three shots in the closing period.
UNE is back in action on Saturday with a Commonwealth Coast Conference clash at Roger Williams University at 3:30 p.m.
Mules roll over Nor’easters
WATERVILLE — Colby College scored 17 goals before halftime on its way to a 23-12 non-conference victory over University of New England in men’s lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon at Bill Alfond Field.
The Mules (5-4) avenged their loss to UNE last year by scoring seven times in the opening quarter and 10 more in the second to establish a commanding 17-4 cushion at halftime. The Nor’easters would outscore Colby 8-6 in the second half.
John Grimaldi had a huge game for the Mules, totaling five goals and four assists. Derek Youngman had three goals and four assists, while Austin Sayre and Jeff Vaz each scored three times.
Patrick Wolfe led the Nor’easters with four goals and a pair of assists. Geoff Bruno, Nick Gross and Mike Allan chipped in two markers apiece.
Colby dominated the stat sheet, topping the Nor’easters in shots (67-30), ground balls (49-11) and face-offs won (33-4). The Mules used a total of four goalkeepers, with starter Tyler Will making three saves in the first half to earn the victory.
Starter Joe Medel had six stops for UNE before giving way to John Dusel, who recorded 19 saves over the final 39:29.
The Nor’easters (3-8) will look to halt a five-game losing skid Saturday when they head to Roger Williams University for a Commonwealth Coast Conference match starting at 1 p.m.
