A Raymond woman was killed in a one-vehicle accident in Harrison Tuesday night after hitting a frost heave that redirected her vehicle off the road and into a tree.

According to Capt. Don Goulet of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Sabrina B. Titus, 28, was declared dead at the scene the next morning when first responders found the wreckage.

“She went over a frost heave, appears to have lost control, hit a snow bank, hit a rock wall, was airborne at this point, and hit a large tree, which crushed the car,” Goulet said.

Goulet said Titus remained in the car undiscovered until the next morning. At about 6:35 a.m., deputies responded after dispatchers received a 911 call from a passing motorist that a damaged 1999 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer was in the yard of 510 Naples Road in Harrison. Harrison and Bridgton first responders pronounced Titus, the lone occupant of the vehicle, deceased at the scene.

According to Goulet, the evidence indicates that Titus, who he said was en route from her home on Roosevelt Trail in Raymond to a friend’s house at the time of the accident, died on impact. Goulet said that the speed limit on the stretch of Naples Road where Titus crashed is 40 mph.

“We are prepared to say that excessive speed is one of the causation factors,” he said.

The vehicle was traveling north on Naples Road, and, according to sheriff’s Lt. Thomas Williams, the vehicle struck a frost heave and left the right side of the roadway just north of the Carsley Road intersection.

The residents of 510 Naples Road told responding deputies they heard a loud crash around 9 p.m. Tuesday evening.

“They went outside to investigate but did not see anything; it would have been difficult to see the vehicle at night,” Williams stated in a press release.

The accident and causation factors remain under investigation by deputies and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Reconstruction Team, Williams said.
