FORT MYERS, Fla. — Eight runs in the last three innings gave the University of Wisconsin-Superior its seventh straight win, as the Yellowjackets recorded a 10-3 decision over the University of New England on Thursday morning at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Softball Classic.

UWS improves to 12-4 behind the arm of Nicolle Gross, who struck out five and walked none while limiting the Nor’easters (5-4) to five hits.

Kristen Haider went 4-for-5 in the game, with two runs batted in on a single in the 7th. Melissa Clark was 2-of-3 at the plate with a go-ahead three-run homer in the top of the 5th. Three other players had two hits apiece.

After the Yellowjackets scored two in the 2nd, UNE took the lead in the bottom of the 4th with three runs. Singles by graduate student Allie Frazier and sophomore Amanda Vallante was followed by a double down the left field line from senior Amanda Vaudreuil, plating Frazier. Both Vallante and Vaudreuil later scored on wild pitches to make it 3-2.

Four runs in the 5th put Wisconsin-Superior on top for good.

Sophomore Lauren Doneski took the setback for UNE in the circle. Frazier was the lone Big Blue player to register multiple hits for the offense.

UNE 16, CLARKSON 2

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The University of New England finished its Florida swing in strong fashion, defeating Clarkson University (N.Y.) by a 16-2 margin in five innings on Thursday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Softball Classic.

The Nor’easters had 17 hits in the game, led by Amanda Vallante with, and two each from Allie Frazier, Amanda Vaudreuil, Abby Lambert and Paige Moore-Haskell.

Lambert smashed a home run and drove in four runs, and pitched all five innings for UNE, giving up two runs on five hits, with three strikeouts and no walks.

Big Blue returns to Maine with a record of 6-4. The Golden Knights are winless in 10 games during their inaugural season.

Men’s Lacrosse falls to ECSU

MANSFIELD, Conn. — Mike Devine scored six times to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University men’s lacrosse team to an 11-8 victory over University of New England in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon at Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

With the win, the Warriors climb over the .500 mark for the season at 4-3. UNE drops to 3-5.

Aside from Devine’s six goals, just two others players scored for Eastern Connecticut. Mike Jordan had four goals, while Tim Reilly added one to go with five assists.

Patrick Wolfe had a strong game for the Nor’easters with four goals. Geoff Bruno, Dan Auger, Mike Allan and Fritz Kleinhempel added a marker apiece.

The Warriors utilized a big second half to earn the victory. With the match tied 6-6 late in the third quarter, Devine and Jordan would notch back-to-back goals to put the hosts up for good. Devine went on to score two more times in the fourth to help squelch any thoughts of a UNE comeback bid.

Quincy Pecora won 9 of 16 face-offs and scooped up six ground balls to help Eastern Connecticut. Goalkeeper Brendan Gilloti came off the bench after halftime to record eight saves and allow just three goals in earning the victory.

Dan O’Gorman was 9-for-17 on the draw and recorded a game-high seven ground balls for the Nor’easters, who received a solid 19-save performance from first-year Joe Medel.

UNE will look to halt a two-game losing streak next Wednesday when Babson College comes to Biddeford for a 4 p.m. game.
