SACO — The city administrator has proposed a $23.5 million municipal budget, a slight increase from the current year’s budget.

City Administrator Richard Michaud presented an overview of the budget at Monday night’s city council meeting.

The proposed budget is a $157,000 increase from last year. It would increase the current mil rate of $18.58 by .05. This would mean a $10 tax increase on a home valued at $200,000. This estimate is only for the municipal budget and does not include the impact of the proposed school budget on taxes.

Michaud said the council wanted a city budget proposal that wouldn’t raise taxes.

“This budget doesn’t quite meet that goal, but it’s close,” he said.

The proposed municipal budget maintains current service levels within the city, said Michaud but would decrease the capital improvement plan from nearly $1.2 million to about $602,000.

The proposed budget would call for a $550,000 draw on the undesignated fund balance, which is nearly $786,000 less than the current year’s draw.

The city council will discuss the proposed budget in a series of workshops before approving a final budget.
