The road to the Biddeford Kohl’s store was cut off to traffic on Monday as crews worked to demolish the building that once housed the clothing and home merchandise retailer.

The building had been cracking and sinking due to improper soil used for fill at the site, which is a former driving range. While the code enforcement office deemed the building structurally sound and did not mandate its closure, according to Biddeford Code Enforcement Officer Roby Fecteau, the company made its own decision to replace it.

The store closed in late February after the company decided to demolish it and replace it with a new building, which will be constructed on a slightly different site, closer to the Home Depot, which is located in the same shopping complex.

The new Kohl’s store is scheduled to open in the fall, according to Kohl’s spokeswoman Julia Fennelly. Until then, Kohl’s employees have the option to work at other nearby Kohl’s, she said.
