Thornton Academy will present three one-act plays by Mark Twain on Thursday, March 6 starting at 7 p.m. at Garland Auditorium. The shows will include “Cannibalism in the Cars,” “Mrs. McWilliams and the Lightning,” and “A Medieval Romance.” Admission to the Thursday night event is free. The One-Act Play Competition, featuring performances from nine area schools, will take place on Friday, March 7 and on Saturday, March 8 at Garland Auditorium. On Friday, performances begin at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, performances begin at 12 p.m. and continue on throughout the afternoon and evening. Sanford Maine Stage Theatre Co. will have a St. Patrick’s Day themed murder mystery dinner show on March 15 at Nasson Little Theater at 457 Main St. in Springvale. Dinner will be corned beef and cabbage, carrots, boiled potatoes, dinner rolls, salad, coffee and desserts. Wine service will cost extra and will begin at 6 p.m. along with some appetizers. “The Drowsy Chaperone,” Kennebunk High School’s spring musical, will be performed at the Alexander Economous Auditorium on March 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. There will be a matinee performance on March 9 at 2 p.m. The show is the high school cast’s rendition of the 2006 Tony Award-winning musical. “The Outgoing Tide” will be performed March 5-30 at the St. Lawrence Arts Center at 76 Congress St. in Portland. The production is directed by Brian P. Allen and stars Broadway veterans Will Rhys and Florence Lacey. The Portland Comedy Co-op will be performing a comedy showcase every first Thursday of the month at She Doesn’t Like Guthries. The first show will be Thursday, March 6 at 8 p.m. and will feature Maine comedian Troy Pennell. This month’s host from The Portland Comedy Co-op will be Lewiston native Aharon Willows-Hebert. Caroline Cotter and Joe Young will perform at the First Parish Federated Church Concert Series at the South Berwick church on Saturday, March 8 at 7 p.m. Cotter was the winner of the 2012 Maine Songwriters Association Songwriting Contest. Her music is described as traditional folk music, often sung in French, Spanish and Portuguese. Young is a folk musician whose songwriting style is influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. The Seacoast Wind Ensemble will join Biddeford High School for a concert in honor of Music in our Schools Month on Thursday, March 6 at 7 p.m. Performances will be given by each band and will also include a piece performed by the combined bands. Hattie Simon will perform solo jazz sets on Sunday, March 9 and 30 from 1-3 p.m. at Elements, located at 265 Main St. Biddeford. The Portland Museum of Art will host an exhibit of artwork created by Maine art students for National Youth Art Month. An exhibition celebration will be held at the PMA on Saturday, March 8 from 4-7:30 p.m. This year celebrates the 34th anniversary of Youth Art Month exhibitions and the 20th annual exhibition at the museum. The PMA’s exhibition, on view from March 8 through April 6, will showcase more than 100 works of art by students throughout the state. The artwork of sisters Gail Henderson and Donna Kelly will be on display at Just Us Chickens Gallery in Kittery from March 5 through the end of the month. A collection of artwork by students in Saco, Dayton and Old Orchard Beach schools will be on display at the University of New England’s Biddeford Campus Center from March 1 to April 1 in celebration of Youth Art Month.
