A Baldwin man was killed and a Naples woman was seriously injured in a two-car collision on snow-slickened roads in Standish Wednesday morning.

According to Lt. Thomas Williams of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the collision took place at about 5:10 a.m. David V. Fortin, 53, of 30 Crawford Road, Baldwin, was driving his black 2005 Pontiac four-door sedan eastbound on Chadbourne Road and was struck by an westbound blue 2007 Volkswagen four-door sedan operated by Vivian E. Densmore, 38, of 216 Songo School Road in Naples. Williams said Densmore lost control of her vehicle after cresting a small hill and crossed the centerline striking Fortin nearly head on.

The accident took place in a 50 mph zone between routes 114 and 237, in an area where several serious accidents have occurred in the past, the most recent of which was the April 2012 fatality of a Saint Joseph’s College student. Williams said the roadway on Wednesday morning was snow- and ice-covered. Fortin, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

Densmore suffered serious injuries and was transported to Maine Medical Center by Standish Fire/EMS. Her condition is not known at this time, Williams said.

Both vehicles were destroyed as a result of the collision, Williams said, and road conditions and imprudent speed were factors in the crash. It is not believed alcohol was a factor, he added.

The road was shut down to traffic for several hours as crews cleared the area. Deputies on scene were assisted by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office reconstruction team.
