PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence police say they’re planning to file several criminal charges against a man shot and wounded by a city officer.
Authorities say 23-year-old Dari Garcia is the custody of sheriffs as he recovers at Rhode Island Hospital. He was shot by Officer Ryan Moroney on Monday night during a domestic disturbance in the Silver Lake neighborhood.
Police say Moroney was forced to shoot Garcia in self-defense during a confrontation. The officer is on paid administrative leave pending an investigation, under routine procedure.
Garcia is being detained without bail on a probation violation charge stemming from 2012 drug convictions. Police say they also plan to charge him with simple domestic assault, malicious mischief, disorderly conduct and heroin possession.
Authorities say Garcia may face more charges after their investigation is finished.
