AMESBURY, Mass. (AP) — Amesbury police are warning area residents to be careful when overhearing a man tell a hard luck story on his cellphone.
Police say the man has been spotted outside a supermarket in town, loudly saying into his phone that he can’t afford baby formula.
Police say generous shoppers have stepped forward to offer him money. After accepting, he takes off in a vehicle.
Officer Thomas Hanshaw tells the Newburyport Daily News while it may not be illegal, the man’s efforts are definitely a scam.
Posters on the Amesbury police Facebook page say they have seen similar scams at stores in Newburyport, Salisbury and Seabrook, N.H.
