RSU withdrawal topic of meeting
The RSU Working Group would like the public to have the opportunity to learn more about the school district withdrawal process and provide input. The first of what is intended to be a series of public informational meetings has been scheduled for that purpose. A meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m., in the Durham Community School Cafeteria. A meeting was held Tuesday at the Pownal Elementary School Cafeteria.
After Freeport voted last month to study school withdrawal, the RSU 5 board appointed a Working Group, which consists of Durham and Pownal board members and Nelson Larkins, a Freeport board member in an advisory role, to represent the board and RSU 5 in negotiating a withdrawal agreement. The Working Group has met with the selectmen from Pownal and Durham to request the creation of an advisory group from each town. The role of the advisory groups is to provide input from residents to the Working Group during the negotiation process. State law requires a second withdrawal vote by Freeport after completion of an agreement before the withdrawal process is finalized. If Freeport rejects the agreement, the RSU will continue in its current formation.
Members of the Working Group are Michelle Ritcheson, chairwoman, and Kate Brown, Candy Decsipkes, Naomi Ledbetter and John Ricker.
