Originally set to expire Dec. 9, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has removed the expiration provision from an October 2008 rule on boating speeds.

NOAA had implemented speed limits along the Eastern Seaboard to reduce the threat of vessels colliding with highly endangered North Atlantic right whales. Studies shown the restriction “significantly decrease the likelihood of fatal ship strikes,” and has not affected commercial maritime operations considerably.
