The Scarborough Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the society’s museum and meeting room, located at 647 Route 1 (adjacent to the Dunstan Fire Station).
A brief business meeting will be followed by a presentation titled “Keepsakes Night.”
Members and guests are invited to share either a keepsake and/or a story related to their Christmas holiday as a child or an adult.
Refreshments will be served.
All monthly meetings are free to members of the public. However, donations are welcomed. The presentation is about one hour in length.

Engine hosts arts and crafts fair
Engine, a community arts organization, will host its second annual Anti-Freeze! Art + Craft Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 110 Main Street, Saco, next door to the Saco River Market on Saco Island. Additionally, the Oak and the Ax will be hosting artisans at 140 Main St. in Biddeford.
Shoppers will have a chance to browse and buy unique gifts made by over 40 local artists and crafters.
Saturday also is “Shop Mom & Pop” day, an initiative sponsored by the Heart of Biddeford, which encourages people to support local small businesses.

Food, fun at ‘kick-a-thon’
Let’s Go! Cumberland County joins forces with Riverview Foundation’s Kids Who Care to hold the sixth annual Kick for Kids “kick-a-thon” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ocean Gateway Terminal.
In addition to food, music and other family fun, the event will feature eight kicking teams – more than 100 kickers of all ages and abilities– that have been sponsored by friends and supporters to reach their kicking goals.
Kick for Kids raises money for Riverview’s Kids Who Care, a community service initiative that aims to support and improve the lives of Maine children through access to award-winning after-school and summer programs.

Gift wrap-making workshop
A “Make Your Own Gift Wrap Workshop for Kids” will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Portland Public Library’s Sam L. Cohen Children’s Library at 5 Monument Square.
Children are invited to come and create their own designs using sponge shapes and tempera paints.
All materials will be provided.
This workshop is free and offered for children ages 12 and younger.
Driver safety for seniors
An AARP Driver Safety for Seniors class will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at the AARP State Office, 1685 Congress St.
Open to age 50 and older, the class serves to refresh and teach the latest in driving techniques and changes. Individuals who successfully complete the course can earn a discount on their auto insurance.
Registration is $12 for AARP members and $14 for all others.

Art walk has extras
Portland Public Library will host a plethora of events for December’s First Friday Art Walk this week, including a 6:30 p.m. performance by Portland Ballet Company in Monument Square; a talk on buying wine for the holidays at 5:30 p.m. in Rines Auditorium, a Southern Maine Community College student-work exhibition from 5 to 8 p.m., and the “Material Matters” closing reception, from 5 to 8 p.m. in Lewis Gallery.

Be Scandinavian for awhile
St. Ansgar Lutheran Church will host a Scandinavian-themed weekend at 515 Woodford St. and Brighton Avenue.
The church’s annual fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and the St. Lucia Festival occurs from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, featuring the bestowing on this year’s young St. Lucia with a crown of candles.

Community Chorus on stage
Accompanied by harp, piano and oboe, the Community Chorus at South Berwick will present two holiday concerts spotlighting modern choral composers this week.
Performances of “A Boy was Born,” will be offered at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Newington, N.H., and at 3 p.m. Sunday at Kennedy Arts Center, Marshwood High School, South Berwick.
The program consists of 20th- and 21st-century arrangements of traditional carols and texts on the theme of the Nativity dating from the 1400s to the 1900s, including works by Benjamin Britten and Francis Poulenc.
Tickets are $10 in advance and for seniors and students, and $12 at the door. To encourage family attendance, the cost is $5 for children under age 12, but please leave very young ones at home.

Holiday festival Friday
The downtown revitalization organization Heart of Biddeford announces more unique twists for this year’s Downtown Holiday Festival and Tree Lighting on Friday.
A live ice-carving show, storytellers, musicians and maybe even dancing vegetables will entertain from 5 to 7 p.m. at City Square, off Main Street.
Santa will travel by horse-drawn sleigh to City Square to light the tree at 5:30 p.m.
The evening also will include photos with Santa at Joseph McKenney Photography Studio (photos by donation), free horse-drawn sleigh rides, cookie decorating at Reilly’s bakery, and concessions provided by La Kermesse. While downtown, visitors will be invited to take a walk through time to visit “The Holidays through the Ages,” window lighting displays in vacant windows, each showing holiday treasures from a different decade over the last century.
A “Shop Mom & Pop Day” shopping event will offer special promotions at participating local small businesses.
Holiday short movies will be shown for free in City Theater from 1 to 3 p.m.
Musicians and performers will include Wicked Good Ice’s on-stage speed carving show; a McArthur Library recitation of “The Night Before Christmas,” the University of New England’s TABS a cappella singers, Biddeford Intermediate School Choir and The Easy Money Band playing holiday favorites!

Holiday at a historic house
The Pejepscot Historical Society will sponsor a visit with Santa Claus from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday in the parlor of the historic Skolfield-Whittier House, 161 Park Row.
Guests are invited to take guided tours of the house at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., and Bowdoin College’s a cappella group Miscellania will be on hand to provide musical entertainment.
Next door, at the Pejepscot Museum, PHS will offer refreshments, holiday shopping and a viewing of the new exhibit “Books, Boots & Beyond: Shopping in Brunswick, 1889-1969,” and Brunswick resident George Tetu’s stained-glass holiday village, featuring local landmarks such as the Chamberlain Museum and the old Town Hall.
Among the items for sale are 2014 calendars featuring vintage images of “Bygone Brunswick,” greeting cards, and ornaments.
Admission to this event is free.
Families are asked to bring their own cameras to photograph their children’s visit with Santa.

The 77th annual Christmas Fair at St. Paul’s Church will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 27 Pleasant St.
The event will feature treasures and antiques, handmade Christmas items and gifts, jewelry, fine art, knitted goods, holiday greens, a country store with ornaments, pet stockings, homemade salsas, pickles, free pictures and face painting with Santa. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Presentation by WWII veteran
Union Historical Society will host a talk with Society member Walter Rich at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the sanctuary of the People’s United Methodist Church, 21 Depot Street, just off Union Common.
Rich will give an illustrated presentation on “Reminiscences of World War II.”
In 1942 Rich enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was assigned to the 8th Air Force, 96th Bomb Group in England, where he served as a ball turret gunner aboard B-17 bombers, flying 15 missions.
He will talk about his experiences of being captured and of being repatriated to the U.S. on a Liberty ship.
Rich has compiled a great deal of information about World War II, including memorabilia, books and magazines,and has written a memoir of his experience.
Following the presentation, refreshments will be served in the church fellowship hall.

Christmas past at Norlands
The Washburn-Norlands Living History Center will open for an interactive Christmas celebration from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at 290 Norlands Road, recreating an 1870s Christmas at Norlands.
Activities include wagon rides, period crafts in the one-room schoolhouse, story-telling, parlor games, cooking in the farmer’s cottage, and tours of the simply-decorated Washburn family mansion.
A piano performance will be given by Kimberly Fleury and Jenavieve Feith, and a Christmas carol sing-along also will be held.
Soup, cider and cornbread will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $5 and attendees can fill a bag with homemade cookies to take home.
Handmade aprons from vintage fabrics will be sold, with proceeds benefiting Norlands’ “Raise the Barn: Rebuild the Magic” fund.
The gift shop will be open.
Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for ages 12 and younger and $25 for families.

How’s your gingerbread?
Penobscot Marine Museum will kick off its annual Gingerbread Christmas By the Sea gingerbread house competition the week.
Children and adults can bring their creations to the Museum Shop and Framer at 40 East Main St. by Thursday.
The public is invited to vote for its favorite gingerbread house during the opening party for the winter exhibit “Underfoot” from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday.
The Searsport Christmas Tree Lighting is planned for 4 p.m. Friday. Children are invited to come and hang their handmade decorations on the tree.
After Saturday, the gingerbread houses may be entered in the annual Chocolate Drop Shoppe Gingerbread House competition; a representative from Chocolate Drop Shoppe will be at Penobscot Marine Museum on Friday with registration forms.
The entry fee is $5, with proceeds benefiting the Belfast Rotary 100 Fund, which provides holiday gifts for struggling families in Waldo County.
