Here are some suggestions for things to do with kids this week.

PORTLAND

The planetarium makes a unique holiday tradition, and is educational while entertaining.

At the Southworth Planetarium, here are some shows that are happening this week, all of which are excellent for children of all ages:

DINOSAURS AT DUSK — A father and daughter travel through time to the Mesozoic Era, the time period of the dinosaurs.

They encounter various dinosaurs through the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous period and through these interactions learn the origins of flight.

“The most visually beautiful, fast-paced show we’ve ever offered” is seen at 1 p.m. Dec. 4 and 7 p.m. Dec. 6.

EIGHT PLANETS AND COUNTING — A traditional solar system show with an Omni-dome make over!

Explore the solar system from the Sun through to its nether edge.

This program immerses you in the solar system with planetary fly-bys and surface landings that will take your breath away, at 1 p.m., Dec. 2, and 8:30 p.m. Dec. 6.

SEASON OF LIGHT (TRADITIONAL) — Our very last slide-based show explores the history of the holiday traditions of Christmas, New Year’s, Hannukkah and the Solstice. 3 p.m., Dec. 7.

Southworth Planetarium is located at the USM campus on Bedford Street, in the Science Building. Admission is $5 to $6.50.

BOOTHBAY

TRAIN RIDE WITH SANTA — On Saturdays — Nov. 30, Dec. 14 and Dec. 21 — from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., start your trip inside historic Freeport Station by writing your letter to Santa by warmth of the wood stove.

Join in the caroling while waiting for your train departure surrounded by holiday decorations including our uniquely decorated tree.

Conductors will call “All Aboard” and everyone, young and old, will board the train to the North Pole.

Settle into a comfortable seat in the steam-heated passenger car as you enjoy the winter wonderland of forest frosted with white snow — weather permitting.

The train will carry you through the village and arrive at the North Pole, where Santa himself will greet you.

Guests will be treated to a special storybook reading while hot chocolate and homemade cookies are served. Guests will board the train and return to Freeport Station.
