A man on the move to Maine after courts in four other states pulled his privilege to operate a motor vehicle probably won’t have much luck here either, following a Nov. 2 traffic stop in South Portland.
According to a press release issued Monday morning by the South Portland Police Department, Lanny Griffin, 31, was clocked doing 76 miles per hour across the Veterans Memorial Bridge a 35 mph zone at 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2.
Officer Chris Gosling was finally able to get Griffin to pull over the 2010 Dodge Ram pickup he was driving at the Exit 2 off-ramp from Interstate 295 in Scarborough. Based on Gosling’s roadside investigation, Griffin, most recently of Milton, Fla., was arrested and booked at the Cumberland County Jail on felony charges of driving while intoxicated and driving after his license had been revoked for being a habitual offender. Lesser charges filed by Gosling include driving without a license, possession of marijuana and criminal speeding, defined as exceeding the posted limit by 30 mph or more. Griffin also had a non-extraditable warrant filed on him in Florida, issued on charges of driving while intoxicated and possession of marijuana.
According to South Portland Police Department spokesman Lt. Frank Clark, Griffin “is in the process of moving to Maine, but does not have a Maine driver’s license.”
Griffin’s driver’s license was permanently revoked in Florida, Clark said, due to four convictions for drunk driving in that state. Moreover, said Clark, Griffin’s right to drive has also been suspended or revoked in Alabama, Nebraska and Kentucky all due to similar convictions in those sates.
“Griffin’s driving history demonstrates a complete inability to voluntarily comply with our motor vehicle laws, making him a menace to the motoring public,” said Clark. “This case will be referred to the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office for review and prosecution.”
According to a clerk at the records office of the Cumberland County Jail, Griffin, who gave a Lewiston address, was released on $2,500 cash bail. He is scheduled to answer the charges against him in Cumberland County Unified Court on Jan. 8.
