BIDDEFORD — Conservative play-calling wasn’t on the mind of Biddeford head coach Brian Curit Friday night, despite not having fullback Capen Macomber, who is out for the season. The Tigers went for it on fourth down four times in the first half, and were successful each time, as Biddeford beat Sanford 28-6 on senior night at Waterhouse Field.

The Tigers (4-2) jumped on the scoreboard on their first possession, with Corey Creeger accounting for 36 yards on the 48-yard drive. The drive ended with a 1-yard touchdown run from Lucas Rhoy on fourth down.

“Sanford is a good team. We just knew that we had to do that,” Biddeford head coach Brian Curit said of being aggressive on fourth down. “We talked about it. We knew that that’s what we needed to do if we wanted to compete with Sanford.”

The Tigers got a break after forcing a three and out by the Spartans, as Creeger returned an Evan Osmer punt 42 yards to the Sanford 28-yard line after it appeared he had called for a fair catch.

Biddeford scored on another fourth down play six plays later, as the Tigers ran a fake field goal, with quarterback Casey Twomey taking the snap and finding Creeger in the end zone from five yards out.

“Corey Creeger, I don’t know how tall or how big he is, but if you take a look at what he does for us, catching the ball, running the ball, he does everything,” said Curit.

After another three and out by the Spartans (2-4), the Tigers scored their third touchdown in their first three drives. Twomey hit Nate Ouellette for a 30-yard pass on 4th-and-7, and five plays later Chhay Ouch ran in from the 1-foot line on another fourth down play.

“What a great job. Nate made a real good catch,” said Curit. “Our halfbacks are very good receivers.”

Corey Brown made a leaping grab on a pass from Twomey for the two-point conversion, which gave Biddeford a 21-0 lead.

Sanford picked up its first first down of the game on its next possession, and picked up more as it drove the ball down to the Biddeford 8-yard line. But a run by fullback Nick Love on 4th-and-2 came up just short, ad the Spartans turned the ball over on downs late in the first half.

“That was a definitely a painful one. There’s something emotionally about scoring right before the half, for the team that does score,” said Sanford head coach Mike Fallon. “Not only did we not get in, then we got to come out in the second half and put our defense on the field.”

The Tigers got the ball to start the second half, and needed just three plays to find the end zone. Rhoy ran 67 yards up the left sideline on the second play of the half, and ran in from four yards out on the next play to put Biddeford up 28-0.

“That was pretty back-breaking real early in the second half,” said Fallon.

The Tigers defense took over from their, as they sacked Sanford quarterback Chase Eldredge four times in the second half. The Spartans were playing without leading rusher Josh Schroder ”“ who was ineligible for the game ”“ and were forced to go to the passing game down four scores. In addition to putting pressure on Eldredge, the Biddeford secondary stepped up with three big pass break-ups.

“They’re playing all man back there, and they got some good, athletic kids, and they did a great job in coverage,” said Fallon.

Sanford ended the shutout with 3:14 left in the game, as Peter Hegarty ”“ who had the bulk of the carries for Sanford ”“ ran in from three yards out one play after Ryan Pepin and Tye Laviolette hooked up for a 43-yard pass play.

“We had to use some different personnel tonight, and I thought the kids gave us great effort. We asked a lot of some young kids,” said Fallon.

Biddeford goes on the road for its final two regular season games, starting with South Portland next Friday. Sanford goes on the road to face Noble.
