BIDDEFORD — The Bowdoin College women’s soccer team scored a pair of goals in each half on its way to a 4-0 shutout of the University of New England in a non-conference match played under the lights at Barbara J. Hazard Field on Tuesday.
The Polar Bears bounced back from their first setback of the season to improve to 4- 1-1, while the Nor’easters dropped below the .500 mark at 3-4.
Bowdoin got all the scoring it needed in the 13th minute when Jamie Hofstetter converted a penalty kick after UNE was whistled for a foul in the box. The Polar Bears doubled their lead in the 26th minute as Molly Popolizio found the back of the net with a header off a high cross from the right corner by Maya Norman.
The visitors scored two more times after halftime. Kiersten Turner knocked in Bowdoin’s second penalty kick of the evening at 52:32, and Evan Fencik buried a blast from 25 yards out with just under 15 minutes to play for her first collegiate goal.
Keeper Bridget McCarthy played the initial 61:30 in goal, making one stop to earn the win. Casey Krause came on to make one save the rest of the way.
Bowdoin hosts 17th-ranked Saturday Brandeis University at 1 p.m.
