STANDISH — The University of New England men’s cross country team started the 2013 season off in style with a dominant performance at the Saint Joseph’s College Duel, totaling 19 points to breeze past the host Monks, who compiled a team score of 39.

UNE sophomore C.J. Vallie posted a six-kilometer time of 21:30 to claim the individual title. After St. Joe’s slid a runner into the second slot, the Nor’easters had the next four runners cross the finish line. Junior Peter LePage (3rd, 21:42), first-year Paul Mangiafico (4th, 22:16), junior Shane Murphy (5th, 22:20) and senior Nate DiMartino (6th, 22:25) completed Big Blue’s list of scoring runners.

The Nor’easters are off for a week before hosting the UNE Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14 at Rotary Park in Biddeford. The gun for the men’s race will go at 11:30 a.m.

UNE rolls past Monks in women’s cross country

STANDISH — The University of New England women’s cross country team got off to a strong start for the 2013 season, defeating the host Monks in a unique head-to-head format at the Saint Joseph’s College Duel on Saturday morning.

The Nor’easters had six of the first seven runners cross the finish line ”“ and eight total in the Top 10 ”“ to breeze to victory.

UNE rookie Brittney Sorbello got her collegiate career off to an impressive beginning, circling the five-kilometer course in a time of 21:08 to top the field. Fellow first-year Tiana Thomas finished as runner-up with a time of 21:31. Junior Natalie Hardman gave the Nor’easters a 1-2-3 showing, placing third with a time of 21:45.

After St. Joe’s junior Heather Eaton broke up the UNE pack, senior Colleen Ahern and junior Michelle Reidy completed Big Blue’s scoring contingent. Ahern clocked the course in 22:00, while Reidy finished nine seconds later.

Junior Erynn Edwards and sophomores Taxia Arabatzis and Lexie Basiliere rounded out the top 10 performances for the visitors.

The Nor’easters are idle next week in preparation for the UNE Invitational Saturday, Sep. 14 at Rotary Park in Biddeford. The women’s race is slated to start at 10:45 a.m.
