BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College men’s cross country team is ranked fifth in the Division III Preseason Poll announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Wednesday.
It is the highest-ever ranking for the Bowdoin men in the USTFCCCA poll. The Polar Bears, who finished 16th at last year’s NCAA Championship, were ranked No. 9 nationally towards the end of last season and peaked at No. 8 at the conclusion of the 2002 campaign.
Bowdoin is the top-ranked team in New England entering the season and returns a pair of All-American seniors in Coby Horowitz, the 2012 NESCAC and New England champion, and Sam Seekins, who finished second at the New England Championship last fall.
The NESCAC is expected to be stacked this autumn, as the league boasts four of the top 11 teams in the rankings. Bates follows Bowdoin at No. 6, with Williams (No. 8) and Tufts (No. 11) also expected to challenge.
The Polar Bears will debut at the Southern Maine Invitational on Sept. 21 before hosting the Bowdoin Invitational on Sept. 28.
