TOPSHAM — On Sept. 12, Access Health and local schools will host a presentation by nationally recognized speaker John Underwood.
This free event will offer two sessions open to administrators, coaches, athletes and community members.
Session one will be held in the Orion Theater at Mt. Ararat Middle School in Topsham from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and session two will be held at Morse High School from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Founder of the American Athletic Institute, Underwood will speak about “Life of an Athlete,” a prevention/intervention program that focuses on excellence and healthy lifestyles in youth sports. The program focuses on how alcohol consumption and drug use negatively impacts athletic performance, but also seeks to promote general health and nutrition.
Underwood, a former NCAA All American distance runner and World Masters champion, has coached more than 20 Olympians. He has studied the impact of nutrition as well as alcohol and marijuana use on sports performance for more than a decade and has been an advocate for drug-free sports at all levels.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
