A 2-year-old was transported to Maine Medical Center on Wednesday evening after the child ingested an overdose of an older sibling’s medication at a Lincoln Street residence .
The child, who is recovering, took a bottle of pills off a counter when the child’s father was not looking. The father noticed almost immediately, and took the child to the hospital. Mid Coast Hospital sent the child down to Maine Medical Center as a precaution.
The overdose was determined to be accidental.
Experts advice parents who notice a child has ingested drugs to call 911 if the person has collapsed or stopped breathing; and to begin CPR if necessary
The parent should then call Poison Control at 1-(800) 222-1222, even if the person has no symptoms. Experts will advise how to proceed.
Do not try to make the person vomit or give the person anything to eat or drink. Give drug or pills the person may have taken to the emergency team, or take them to the emergency room or doctor’s office.
