Two Portland-area men who allegedly threatened a Bath couple with knives earlier this year before fleeing in a taxi cab had those charges dismissed in Sagadahoc County Superior Court.

Fadhil Alghazi, 52, and Ali K. Anthony, 40, both faced charges of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon after a couple reported being threatened with knives at their home on Bluff Road at 9:06 p.m. April 3. As police responded, the suspects allegedly left the scene in a taxi police say was operated by Anthony. Police said they located the vehicle downtown and that Alghazi was a frontseat passenger in the taxi.

According to court records, Alghazi, of Portland, faced assault, terrorizing and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. All were dismissed due to insufficient evidence.

Anthony, of Gorham, faced charges of terrorizing, indecent conduct and criminal threatening with a dang erous weapon. These charges were also dismissed due to insufficient evid ence, according to court documents. Assistant District Attorney Patricia Mador said the case will be reviewed in the future to determine if there is sufficient evidence to proceed with prosecution.

Brunswick attorney Jonathan Handelman represented Alghazi and said Wednesday he believes the charges were dismissed against his client by Mador because the state’s witnesses were not credible. Anthony’s attorney did not return a phone call Wednesday.
