New natural gas lines will be installed downtown sometime after Labor Day, officials told the City Council recently.

The timing will be coordinated with the addition of four ADA compliant crossings or bump-outs on Front Street.

The improvements would be funded by Maine Natural Gas, the Brunswick-based subsidiary of Central Maine Power Co.’s parent.

Elsewhere, the city is seeking to borrow money to repair streets.

City Manager William Giroux told councilors the proposed road bond could be considered by the City Council in September, so it can be added to the November ballots for voter approval.

The local road bond, for $2.5 million, is necessary to get through the next round of road improvements, Giroux has said.

The city can only expect $80,000 from the state for road improvements, barring the grant for lower High Street that the city is applying for.

The road plan currently includes improvements for High Street, North Street, the north end of Washington Street and, if the funds stretch far enough, to include several roads in north Bath, such as Whiskeag Road and Ridge Road.
