OLD ORCHARD BEACH — On Wednesday night the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide and Seacoast Mavericks attempted to do what had never been done before: Beat Mother Nature.

As you might expect, she’s still undefeated.

The Tide and Mavericks attempted to play the wet and foggy conditions at The Ballpark but could only get in three innings, with the game suspended with Seacoast leading 3-2.

The game will be resumed on Friday as part of a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m., the second doubleheader the two teams will play in as many days due to the nasty conditions that have prevailed upon Maine so far this summer.

“The weather this summer has been miserable,” OOB manager Chris Torres lamented. “We had some diehard fans come out and stay for the game, which was pretty cool, but we just need better weather. I’ve never seen weather this bad. It’s pretty brutal.”

Under pressure to get the game in due to the number of makeups already on both team’s schedules, the game started on time at 7 p.m. amidst a dense fog that made it difficult to see into the outfield from first base.

That became a factor right away as Seacoast leadoff man Clay Fenwick singled into right on a pop fly that any other day likely would have been caught. But OOB right fielder Skip Flanagan couldn’t find the ball, and Fenwick eventually came around to score on a Rob Hogenkamp single.

The Mavericks added two more runs off Tide starter Harry Ridge in the second, using three singles, two walks and a sacrifice fly to go up 3-0.

The Tide got two back in the third, however, as a Flanagan walk followed by an Aaron Wilson single and a passed ball put runners on second and third for Phil Sciretta, who drilled a Ty Sterner pitch into center field to score two.

Sterner got out of the inning without any further damage, and a quick meeting between Torres, Mavericks manager David Adam and the umpires brought a suspension to proceedings as the field was deemed too wet to continue.

The Tide (11-13) and Mavericks (10-17) will see much more of each other over the next two days, first facing off in a doubleheader at Leary Field in Portsmouth, N.H. at 5 p.m. today, and then returning to The Ballpark on Friday for another doubleheader.

Otero named FCBL pitcher of the week

While the conditions were anything but bright on Wednesday, the Futures Collegiate Baseball League shined a little bit of sun on Raging Tide pitcher Ryan Otero this week, naming him the league’s Pitcher of the Week for the period ending on July 7.

Otero, a native of Coral Gables, Fla., and a sophomore at the University of Miami, picked up the honor after allowing just one earned run in 11 innings of work to begin July, going 1-0 in the process.

In a 2-1 victory over Torrington on July 2, Otero struck out five over six innings, allowing five hits and two walks in the process.

Then last Sunday, he picked up his first win of the season in a 3-0 win over Seacoast, striking out five over five shutout innings.

The two starts lowered Otero’s ERA by over a run from 4.08 to 2.83, and Torres said Otero’s recent success came down to one thing: “Throwing strikes, plain and simple,” Torres said. “He throws strikes with movement, and he’s pounding the zone.

“That’s the most important thing. After that, you can tweak what you need to.”
