“Katherine Bradford: August,” featuring paintings by the artist who lives parttime in Brunswick, will open Saturday, June 29 at Bowdoin College Museum of Art with a public reception beginning at 6 p.m.

The museum is coordinating the Bradford show with the opening of the exhibition “Maurice Prendergast: By the Sea.”

Bradford is a New Yorkbased painter and a long-time member of the Maine arts community. Her exhibition includes eight recent paintings all concerned with the ocean, populated by boats and bathers, as a metaphor for the vagaries of modern life.

“Bradford’s ocean paintings can simultaneously be read as hilarious and catastrophic,” according to a museum program describing the exhibit, which will continue through Sept. 1.
