Recycling saving town

According to the Pownal Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling Committee, Pownal saves an $88 per ton fee on any material recycled through curbside pickup. Ecomaine charges Pownal fees for waste sent to them in the blue bags but does not charge a fee for recycled goods. Pownal has achieved a 45 percent recycling rate so far this fiscal year (since July 1, 2012), more than any other ecomaine member community. View several short videos at the ecomaine website, www.ecomaine.org. on where your recycling goes and how it is processed, as well as where your trash goes and how it is used to create electricity.

For a tour of the ecomaine automated recycling facility or waste-to-energy plant, contact Leo Maheu at maheu@ecomaine.org or call ecomaine at 773-1738.
