AUGUSTA (AP) — The Maine Senate has rejected a bill that would require background checks at gun shows.

The bill to close what’s been called the gun show loophole was rejected Thursday by a 16 -19 vote. The measure now goes to the House.

That and numerous other gun-control bills surfaced in the wake of last December’s shootings of 20 children and six educators at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

The bill before the Senate would have required a national instant criminal background check be performed prior to the sale of a firearm at a gun show.
