Mt. Ararat High School has announced the top 10 academically ranked students in the class of 2013. The school serves students in grades nine through 12 from Bowdoin, Bowdoinham, Harpswell and Topsham.

Adeline Schneider has earned the top academic rating in the class of 2013. She is the daughter of Holly Hogan and Kurt Schneider and resides in Bowdoinham. She attended Nobleboro Central School. Her school activities have included National Honor Society, Envirothon, Interact, cross-country, nordic skiing, and track. She was recognized as a National Merit Scholar, Advanced Placement Scholar, Excellence in U.S. History 2012, Excellence in Mathematics 2012 and Excellence in English 2011. Schneider will attend the University of Maine in the fall and plans to study engineering. English teacher Leonard Krill is a teacher who had a strong influence on her during high school.

Kristen Haines earned the designation of second in her class. She lives in Topsham where she attended Wili ams-Cone Elementary School, and is the daughter of Jennifer and Mark Haines. School activities include Interact Club president, National Honor Society 2013, Student Council and Art Club.

Haines was on the high school’s high honor roll for 2011-12, was a National Merit Scholarship candidate and recognized for Freshman Excellence in German, Sophomore Excellence in Advanced English II, Junior Excellence in AP Language and Composition, Junior Excellence in Advanced Pre-Calculus, Junior Excellence in Academic Chemistry, and Junior Excellence in Art in Society. She will attend Hampshire College in the fall to study social sciences and then further her research in sociology and cultural and human studies, either through a graduate program or as a part of a research institution. She was strongly influenced by social studies and history teacher Dennis Edmondson.

Ranking third in his class is Ryan Smith, the son of Kim and Dan Smith. He lives in Topsham and attended Woodside Elementary School. Smith has participated in football, indoor-outdoor track, lacrosse, Science Olympiad, math team, National Honor Society, Science Fair and Boys’ State. His academic honors include high honors, Excellence in Mathematics in 2009 and 2011, Excellence in Science 2009, Excellence in Physical Education I 2009, Excellence in Physical Education II 2010, and a Dartmouth Alumni club Book Award in 2012.

Smith will attend the School of Management and the Kilachand Honors College at Boston University in the fall. English teacher Stewart Palmer is a teacher who had a strong influence on Smith.

Brennan Radulski is fourth in her class. She resides in Bowdoinham and is the daughter of Tom Radulski. She attended Williams- Cone Elementary School. She participated in cross-country, outdoor track, Art Club, Wind Ensemble, and National Honor Society. Her academic honors include Excellence in Physical Education, Excellence in Art, and her selection for District III Music in 2009 and 2011. In the fall, she hopes to attend Macalester or Bates, and while unsure of just what the future holds in store, “I hope that it will be exciting.”

Teachers Courtney Reichert, Janet Galle, Jeff Trippe and Diane Fournier have all had strong influences on Radulski.

Ranking fifth in class is Eloise Melcher, daughter of Carolyn and Kurt Melcher of Bowdoin. She attended Bowdoin Central School.

Melcher participated in Student Council, PALS, Big Brother- Big Sisters, National Honor Society, Interact, nordic ski team, Science Olympiad and Girls’ State; and was senior class president, a writing center tutor and a high school representative for the Cathance River Education Alliance board. Her academic honors include the Wellesley Book Award, Pejepscot Historical Society, Excellence in AP U.S. History, Excellence in AP European History, Excellence in Advanced English II, Excellence in Spanish III, Excellence in English I, WCSH 6 Teens Who Care, and DAR Good Citizen Award.

In the fall, Melcher plans to attend Colby College or the University of Maine to major in history. English teacher Leonard Krill and social studies and history teacher John Dever were strong influences for her.

Elsie Morgan, sixth in her class, is the daughter of Lydia Jordan and Herman Morgan and lives in Bowdoin, where she attended Bowdoin Central Elementary School.

Morgan’s school activities include cross country, outdoor track and field, Science Olympiad, math team, Wind Ensemble and National Honor Society; and she was a writing center tutor. Her academic honors include ninth grade Excellence in Math and Social Studies, 10th grade Excellence in Math and Health, a 2011 Williams College Book Award, Excellence in German, second place Science Olympiad Anatomy and Physiology, second place Science Olympiad Technical Problem Solving, and she was a 2012 Girls’ State Representative and Trig star local winner.

In the fall, Morgan will attend the University of Rhode Island and plans to become a pharmacist. Chemistry teacher Donna Dionne is a teacher who provided a strong influence for her.

Marti Crippen has earned the rank of seventh place in the class of 2013. She is the daughter of Stephanie Burns and Andrew Crippen and lives in Topsham, where she attended Williams- Cone Elementary School. She has participated in varsity tennis, PALS, Interact, SLAC, math team, and tutored in Spanish. She was recognized academically with a Freshman Spanish award and was a Student of the Month nominee.

ALEX DENIS
ALEX DENIS
Crippen will attend the University of New England in the fall to major in elementary education and minor in Latin American studies. She plans to be a K-2 teacher. Teachers Jeanne Billings and Candace Myers strongly influenced her during her high school career.

Achieving the rank of eighth in his class is Alex Denis, the son of Amy and Jean Denis who lives in Topsham, where he attended Woodside Elem entary School. His school activities include math team, ITeam, National Honor Society and he tutored in the writing center. He received math awards for achieving an “A” average all year in grades 10 and 11 and was nominated to the U.S. Air Force Academy by former U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe.

Denis will attend the Florida Institute of Technology in the fall and plans to become an aeronautical engineer designing aircraft and high performance cars. A teacher who strongly influenced him was former elementary teacher John Anagnostis.

Caroline Carrigan is ranked ninth in the class. She is the daughter of Sondra and Charles Carrigan and lives in Topsham, where she attended Williams- Cone Elementary School. She has served as a class officer on Student Senate, and participated in Science Olympiad, PALS, Aquila, Science Fair, and girls soccer and softball. She was recognized as a high honors student and for Outstanding Achievement in Health Education and Overall Science student of the Year.

Carrigan will attend Southern Maine Community College in the fall and plans to transfer to the University of Maine and graduate with a major in environmental science. She was strongly influenced by science teachers Rebecca Williams and Mike Cooney.

Elizabeth Snowdon ranks 10th in the Class of 2013. She is the daughter of Brenda and Donald Snowdon and lives in Topsham where she attended Williams- Cone Elementary School.

S n owd o n was a member of Aquila since grade 10 and was editor in grades 11 and 12. She also participated in Art Club all through high school, math team in 11th and 12th grades, National Honor Society including as secretary her senior year; and in Yearbook.

Her academic honors include Excellence in English (ninth and 11th grade), Excellence in Social Studies (ninth grade), Excellence in Art (ninth and 10th grade), Excellence in French (10th grade), and she was recognized as an AP Scholar with Honors.

In the fall, Snowdon will attend Bowdoin College to major in English and a minor in French or visual arts. She plans to “write words that empower, to create art that inspires, to share my passions and gifts freely.” She was strongly influenced by art teacher Zachary Fields and English teachers Stewart Palmer and Janet Galle.

Graduation ceremonies begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 9 at Mt. Ararat High School.
