Thumbs up to the Sanford Downtown Legacy for its creation of a pop-up science museum in the city. Sanford’s Pop-Up Science Art and Technology Museum opened Saturday, next to the Sanford Farmers Market in Central Park. The museum will be open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays, with free admission. Organizers said it features a number of hands-on exhibits for children with a focus on the STEM subjects ”“ science, technology, engineering and math ”“ and art.

We’re pleased to see the SDL taking the initiative here to get young people interested and engaged in these subjects, and we hope the museum finds enough support to become a permanent fixture in the future.

Thumbs down to whomever took political signs on display in Old Orchard Beach. This is certainly a contentious time for the town, with the recent firing of the town manager and the possible recall of the entire town council. Further exacerbating these problems, however, is of no help to the town, and removing political signs is not likely to have any effect on the upcoming recall and election votes. Whoever is responsible should return the signs, as candidates likely spent their own money to have them printed, since such campaigns rarely garner funds for their support. Councilor Laura Bolduc said last week that the 150 signs are worth more than $750. There’s good news for anyone who has information that leads to the arrest of those involved, too: A $1,000 reward.

Thumbs up to all those who took time out of their holiday weekend to attend a Memorial Day event. Whether it be a parade, ceremony or visit to veterans graves, the effort makes an impact. Veterans of all wars have had to make many sacrifices to allow all U.S. citizens to enjoy the freedoms we have today and to maintain the U.S. as the “land of the free.” A lot of effort and planning goes into the many events that mark Memorial Day, and it means a lot of the those people and the veterans who attend ”“ either to participate or simply observe ”“ that the rest of us show up and show our support.

Thumbs up to the Sanford City Council for moving forward with proposed dog park for the city. At last week’s council meeting, councilors voted to approve a new location for the park: A 1.1-acre, city-owned property between the Armory and River Street, on William Oscar Emery Drive. Despite some concerns raised by the trails committee, we believe the issues can be worked out so that the trail retains its qualities while families and individuals in the city with dogs can have a public place to bring their pets, where the animals can enjoy a little open space and socialization. Especially with the newly approved dog ordinance changes, which will require leashes in most public spaces, a dog park will be a wanted and needed addition to the city’s properties available for public recreation.
